How i will construct my music magazine bearing in mind audiences pleasures.

Audiences pleasures- A set of techniques that a magazine will use to persuade an audience to buy a magazine and to maintain readership.

Sets of techniques are;

Direct mode of address- How it speaks to the reader. Through language (topic specific language) such as colloquial language,pro-nouns and semantic words within the field of music.
*I will use this when constructing my music magazine,as my magazine genre is  R&B I will colloquial language and semantic words such as 'y'all, dope, ya bish'
Sense of being given too- Magazines including freebies for example; gifts, downloads, patterns and competitions.
*Within a sense of being given to,I will use this in my magazine by Listing the 'Top 10 freshest R&B tracks right now'. I may include a competition to win posters,Cd's and merchandise of my interviewer 'Kendrick Lamar'.

Sense of belonging to a community of readers- A group of people that have the same taste in music and share their thoughts through forums, fan clubs, tour dates, chart updates, interviews and to gain more exclusive information.
*This is also useful when constructing my music magazine as I will provide tour dates of artists, music updates within R&B, interviews (Kendrick Lamar) and exclusive information (New upcoming artists, facts about their personal life, new songs) in order to make the reader belong to a community.

Opportunity for self definition- Something that helps the reader to define themselves as a person.
*Parts of my magazine that will create opportunity for self definition are interviews where the reader may relate.

Ritual of consuming the familiar- When the magazine has a certain pattern or consistent regular style throughout it. Which the reader is comfortable with and subscriptions continue.
*I will use this when constructing my magazine as my theme through out is 'black and white' and occasionally red. My magazine will also feature R&B/Rap artists only so the reader will not come across say an unexpected Pop artist.

Audience pleasures    -Attracting an audience

How will I attract my audience through my music magazine?
The contents of my magazine will include various audience pleasure. Direct mode of address being one of them for example; colloquial language and semantic words used within my interview with my chosen artist as my music genre is R&B/Rap. I will use the audience pleasure of a sense of being given to by including freebies like posters of the featured artist in my magazine, I will provide competitions for my audience to participate in; to meet the featured artist, to win a signed CD or merchandise etc.  Also downloads and new up-coming artists will be included within my magazine for my audience to discover. I will use opportunity for self-definition within my magazine through the use of interviews as my audience may relate to what has been said in the interview. Ritual of consuming the reader will be used when attempting to attract an audience as my magazine will only feature R&B/Rap artists as it is of that genre, therefore my audience will not have any unexpected say Pop or Rock artists. I will also use belonging to a community of readers by providing information on forums, fan clubs and tour dates for my audience to participate in and share their interests with one another.

Socio-economic groups

Overall I disagree with the idea of catogorising people due to their income and job title. It is almost de-humanising to put certain people at a higher class than other people ( e.g class A compared to E). I feel that everyone should be at an equal level. Although the use of Socio-economic groups is exceedingly useful when defining your type of audience when creating a music magazine as you can easily narrow it down and choose which Socio-economic class is best suited for your magazine&type of genre.

improvements of magazine draft Predomination

Improvements to my music magazine front cover & my finished piece.

Improvements made to my contents page and my 2nd draft:
Here I have made changes to the 'Features' column as in my first draft this column was placed on the left hand side where as I have changed it to right hand side so that both columns are placed in the same way. I also changed the positioning of 'The kings claim to reign' more towards the right hand side of the page so that my writing was spaced out more.

Music Magazine article draft of Predomination

"Eminem is a Genius"

Top Dawg Entertainment's king of rap Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, brought up in Compton,California is also a member of the supergroup Black Hippy from the west coast. Kendrick's music has previously reflected upon the city that he is from and how he rose from the dark place of violence that he was surrounded upon but also sheds positivity upon his city:Compton as it is often portrayed as being an anesthetized place. His album good kid, m.A.A.d city was released October 22nd, 2012 which was a huge success and toured internationally.Along with his previous albums 'Youngest Head Ni**a in Charge', 'Training Day', 'Section 80', 'C4', No sleep 'Til NYC' and 'Overly Dedicated' albums. As we can identify Kendrick is extremely familiarised within the music industry which is why various artists are lined up into collaborating with him.In this case Kendrick was honoured in collaborating with the all time rapper Eminem on his new album "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" featuring on the track "Love Game". Recently Kendrick has discovered a new Labelmate "SZA' the 23 year old R&B singer from Maplewood,New Jersey is the newest addition to TDE. Who of which is a unique contribution to the label, huge aspirations are ahead for the focused but scatter full artist.

Predomination: "Hi kendrick, thanks for taking your time to join us today"

Kendrick: "No worries, im blessed to be here with you guys"

Predomination: "Firstly how has the success of your music influenced your life so far?"

Kendrick:"So far my life has changed massively y'all, but most of all the fact that my folks are able to be excited about my music career and the success of it,the fact that their proud is a huge blessing for me. As a child growing up we didn't have a lot yanno and i've a big family yo which made it harder ,so the fact they don't have to live through a struggle any more is incredible man. I just want to inspire people through my music and thats the aim"

Predomination: "How have you been able to maintain grounded and humble throughout your career?"

Kendrick:"I think I'm just consistently remembering where i come from, my folks and homeboys from Compton, and how honoured i am to be where i am today. I try to avoid social media as much as i can, i a'int about that [laughs], I'm just being me and trying to adapt rather than change. Ive seen all types of people become affected by the media and I'm aware of it all, so i prevent it as much as possible.

Predomination:"Well changing topic of conversation here, how's the love life of Lamar? anything serious"

Kendrick:" [laughs] My love life...  na there aint nothing serious going on, you know how it is.[laughs],Whenever people ask me about love i just refer to God, because to me love is God and i feel strongly about that.

Predomination:" I see, that's a very good way of looking at it! Now tell us about some of the best rappers in your opinion?"

Kendrick:" In my opinion, some of the best rappers of all time are.... Jay-Z, Nas,B.I.G, Andre 3000,Tupac, Eminem, Rakim,Method man and Dmx.

Predomination:"Speaking of Eminem, tell us about your recent collaboration on his album"

Kendrick:"My collaboration with Eminem on 'Love Game' was interesting fo' sure [laughs], basically when I was recording for the collab in my knowledge I was just supposed to be recording the hook,so there I was recording the hook and Eminem comes back a little while later and asks me for the verse, which I wasn't expecting [laughs], therefore i had to rewind and do tha verse, but it was all cool in the end,all worth it.

Predomination:"What was the style of the song that Eminem&yourself was aiming for?"

Kendrick:"The style of the song is kinda different, it's not what you'd typically expect, but the purpose of it is to sound wrong in some words, it's got a quirky feel to it and that's what makes it dope. Check it out"

Predomination:"What is your opinion on Eminem as an artist?"

Kendrick:" Eminem is a genius when it comes to rap, especially lyrically. That's why Eminem is one of a few artists that could create a song like 'Love Game' because his mentality has an extremely diverse imagination,it was a pleasure to work with him."

Predomination:"Also tell us about T.D.E's newest member 'SZA'"

Kendrick:"'SZA' is a hardworkwer but one thing about her is she is always herself and if she doesn't agree with something or ain't feeling it she'll state it, which I like in her. She's true to herself.

Predomination:" What is her music based around so far?"

Kendrick:" A lot of her music refers to her parents or up bringing, as her father was a strict and militant man and she was a sensitive girl, music wasn't her destiny in her parents eyes, but she stuck wid it.You'll be hearing lots from her soon"

Predomination:"I'm looking forward to it! Quick last question, tell us about your touring with Kanye West"

Kendrick:"Yes, supporting Kanye has been a great experience. I find It good to tour around with other artists and try and conquer their fans by creating some more fans of your own, it's a good challenge and focus. Kanye is a phenomenal artist and worker."

Predomination:" Well thankyou for taking your time and talking with us today and letting us into the world of Kendrick Lamar"

Kendrick:"It's all good, thanks for having me"

Music magazine double page spread prelim:

I based my double page spread around the double page spread below, I liked the way that this artist had her eyes shut therefore was not in direct contact with the camera which is what I wanted when choosing an image for the draft of my music magazine front cover as it creates a more personal feel for the audience and that we are almost drawn into the life of this artist rather than the typical image which would taken in a photo-shoot which creates more of a robotic/predictable feel. I also like the fact that they enlarged the letter S as the beginning of their sentence therefore I used the letter K as it is the first initial of 'Kendrick Lamar' my featured artist, Although I did not enlarge it as much as on the double page spread beneath.

Music magazine draft front cover/ contents page front cover

Below is also an image of a magazine front cover from the music magazine 'Complex' of which I have based my draft front cover upon. I liked the way that 'Complex' have used a black and white effect on their front cover rather than having the image in colour and just taking the photos and using the typical white background. Therefore I used a BW/Sepia effect on my draft front cover to achieve this look. I also liked the way that their front cover was minimalistic and did not cram their cover with too many sell lines, furthermore I only used three sell lines on my front cover as I do not want my front cover to look crammed.
