Textual analysis of existing texts

Frontcover

The sell lines situated at both sides of the magazine provide a snippet of what is to come further on in the magazine. The sell line ‘Katy Perry turns it up’ is to catch the attention of the reader and show that there is more included of Katy Perry inside. Moreover this could be conveyed as sexual along with the image of her on the front.

The masthead is partyl covered by the mid shot of Katy Perry. They are able to do this as the Rolling stones are a hugely populated in the market of music magazines. Although the colour of the Rolling stones masthead is consistently red where as they have changed the colour in to pink to convey the feministin Katy Perry and  to follow the girly theme. The colour pink may also represent pop music in this case,as she is a pop music artist.

In the main image Katy Perry is positioned in a sexual and provocative way. Her body to the side, hands behind her back and mouth open. Moreover the way she is dressed is guaranteed to grab the attention of men especially (shown through the male gaze)Her choice and style of clothing also represents the wild personality of Katy Perry and that it will be shown in the magazine.

History of music magazine 'Vibe'

Vibe is an american music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. Vibe magazine is based around Hip-hop and R&B music artists, actors and entertainers. There was a lot of confusion and debate as to when vibe magazine started out, truth be told it actually started in the early 90's.Vibe recently shut down in the summer of 2009.Vibe was owned both by Jones and Time, Inc. until it was sold to Miller Publishing. Recently after that, Vibe was then sold by Miller Publishing to Spin magazine. Vibe was owned by Spin for several years until it was bought by Wicks Group of Companies in 2006.The reason for these miss-judgments is that Inter Media Partners, LP had been promoting about the launch of the magazine continuously,  what not a lot of people know is that it will just be a relaunch of vibe magazine with the new founded owners.Vibe magazine is issued every other month with a double cover, various artists that have been on the cover of vibe magazine are Miguel as shown above,Chris brown, Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki minaj, Snoop dogg, Frank ocean, Mariah carey, Beyonce, R kelly ,Eminem etc.
What is the typical content?
The contents that vibe use in their magazine is music reviews and interviews and columns on artists and their music. They do features with 20 questions etc including the back page. They usually have a celebrity gossip column and also feature on up and coming artists. On the the other hnad vibe magazine also promote designer clothing and have devoted several pages to branded clothing designed by the music artists themselves, such as: G-unit by 50 cent and Nelly's apple bottoms. Therefore a music item like 'Beats' would be promoted in vibe magazine and are relevant for this day and age as various R&B/Hip-hop artists use 'Beats' headphones and often are seen wearing them in their music videos.

Target audience and distributer?
The target audience for Vibe magazine is primarily a younger audience.Mainly between the ages of 18-34 of followers of hip/hop. The distribution of Vibe can be done at selected stores although it is usually through their magazine website.

Print terminology

Print terminology

Bleed is a printing term that refers to printing that goes beyond the edge of the sheet before trimming. This will help me with the construction/structure of my magazine and will ensure no errors.
1. Trim is where the product will be cut.
2. Bleed is the safe zone outside the trim area
3. Margin is the safe zone inside the trim area

Gutter, the space between columns of printed text.
This will help me when producing a double page spread. It will allow room for bindings in the magazine, also that my text will not get lost within the page.

Ally it can help space out the writing on a page, this will help me separate the columns which will make it easier to read.

A strap line is a short catchy sentence that represents a business, project or concept. It is a way of expressing something of what you do: what benefits you give your customers. This can help me with my magazine as it will catch the readers attention and be identifiable. Such as Maybelline: 'Maybe your born with it,Maybe it's Maybelline'

A tagline is a small amount of text which serves to clarify a thought for, or designed with a form of dramatic effect. This can also help me for similar reasons.

A pug is the little items/snippets either side of the masthead also known as 'ears' just like a pug. This will help me for extra information on my magazine cover.

A pull quote/call out is  an excerpted line or phrase, in a larger or display typeface, run at the top of a page or in a mid-column box to draw attention to the text of the article or story from which it is quoted.  This will help me as it may gain interest from the buyer.
.

M.I.R.A is a term that will help me gain information about other magazines and also help me with information in order to produce my magazine.

M - Media form - how you know? movie, mag, TV series
I - Institution - who made it? - was it a powerful company or a local company ex
R - Representation - who or what does it show? Words or images
A - Audience - who is it for?  Younger/older

Pass audience is someone who has not purchased your magazine but has read it from a family member/friend who has brought your magazine and left it hanging about the house or office etc.

Other print terms in which will mainly help me with the presentation of my magazine:

Serif font -is a small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol. It is more traditional and trustworthy.

Sans serif - is the opposite to serif, it is more modern and trendy. (For a younger audience).

Masthead- The title of a magazine etc.

Uppercase- Capital letter opposed to lower case.

Lowercase -Smaller letters as oppose to capital letters.

Sells lines- snippets of information in order to sell the magazine.

Mid shot- a camera shot which is from the waist above.

Long shot -a camera shot taken from a distance.

Close up- a close camera shot which is focused of the face of a person or detail of something.

High angle - a camera shot which is elevated above the action.

Research methods i have/will use

Advantages}

A Research method i will use which are helpful is secondary research as i will use search engines to find out who produces and distributes a music magazine of my choice also when i need to create a list of magazine publisher.
Also i will information from the internet and books to give me a brief history of the magazine, typical contents, when i need o crate a list of front covers form all different genres, when i must research which publishing house publishes the most successful magazines and also who are the typical readers of a magazine using the NRS website(www.nrs.co.uk). Moreover other/older magazines by the same title will provide me with a brief history and contents used in the past.

Primary research will also be useful to use whilst finding out who is the typical reader as i can do a survey. Moreover i can ask people for their feedback and information from others once i create a mood board of images and ideas.Which links with qualitative research as i can get personal feedback and suggestions of which i may add to my mood boards.

Quantitative research will also help me with identifying a typical reader/ target audiences as it recognises patterns and trends.

Research methods

Research Methods

I will be using different types of research methods for AS Media such as primary research, secondary research, quantitative  research and qualitative research.

Primary research is research I will carry out myself. It is extremely helpful as it can provide you with personal feedback and information from others. For example an interview, questionnaire, surveys. Also the internet and textual analysis.

Secondary research is research that somebody else has carried out, search engines, websites, books, magazines and journals etc. It is good to find out information about music magazines. Also the NRS is a huge help to magazine producers as it provides them with information such as the age of their buyers eg 15-34 and 35+ ,how many people buy their magazine in comparison to other music magazines and lastly tells them the type of class that are buying their magazine, ABC1 higher an C2DE lower.

Quantitative research is an identification of patterns and trends therefore this helps pick a certain audience to target, e.g men tend to read Kerrang! than women, also which age are most likely to buy this magazine.( financial side)

Qualitative research is fairly similar to primary research as it gets opinions and feedback of others, but is also concerned with people's ideas, thoughts and feelings about the magazine: such as an interview.

Denotation and connotation

Denotation's and Connotations

A connotation is what we think about when we heard a word or see an image. What feelings or emotions we have, such as happy or sad. Where as denotation is the actual definition of the word and the meaning of it.

For example: denotation: blonde hair
Connotation: dumb,girly and playful etc.

Denotation and connotations are used in music/general magazines by letting the reader know who the magazine may be aimed at such as the r&b/rap magazine 'Vibe' would typically have a rap artist on the front(Kanye west),moreover the audience will know what the magazine entails before reading the article inside.

Ideology

An ideology is a beliefAn ideology is a world view, a system of values, attitudes and beliefs which an individual, group or society holds to be true or important; these are shared by a culture or society about how that society should function. Media texts always reflect certain values or ideologies though sometimes we may not be aware of this. An example might be that in some texts, such as action films, solving problems with force is seen as an acceptable value and reflects a certain ideology.

AS Media music magazine front cover ideology

ASMedia Kerrang! front cover

This is the front cover to the music magazine of 'Kerrang!' Which is a popular rock music magazine. Their ideology for this front cover is that it is extremely rebellious with the image of the lead singer from a rock band 'Green day', his presentation of messy black hair, thick black eyeliner, an open shirt and an electric guitar in his hands conveys that their belief is that he is a rebellion, his attitude is that he doesn't care about anything or anyone and that he is different to other genres of music. The idea is to present the magazine that it had many imperfections and to draw in an audience that want to look and be different (teenagers).
The way that the image is taken from a low angle conveys dominance in this artist as he is positioned above. Moreover the way that the masthead and sell lines are written in capital letters to portray authority and loud sound that rock music provides.
